What is squamous cell carcinoma?
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. About 2 in every 10 skin cancers are cases of squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma occurs when damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays leads to abnormal changes in the skin's top layer, known as the squamous cells. After the skin has changed, squamous cell carcinoma can occur. Squamous cell carcinoma can develop in all parts of the body, although it is more common in the skin areas, which are usually exposed to the sun. While the majority of SCC can be easily treated, if not diagnosed in the early stages, it can become dangerous and even deadly.
